Maybe You're Not Behind
September always feels like a threshold to me.
Here in the lower Catskill Mountains of New York, the farmers' market is about to hit one of my favorite times of year.
Everything is coming in.
Potatoes. Peppers of every kind. Onions and garlic. Winter squash. Apples and pears.
I'll roast Italian frying peppers and tuck bags of them into our chest freezer. I'll freeze tomatoes and corn. I'll go apple picking and make applesauce.
It's the season of putting things up.
Gathering what's here now so it can nourish us later.
And apparently, I can't talk about this without getting teary-eyed.
(I've tried. Twice.)
Because I have so much gratitude and respect for the farmers who grow the food my family eats.
We walk through the market in September and see abundance piled on tables.
But we don't see everything it took to get there.
The sleepless nights.
The rain that came at exactly the wrong time — or didn't come at all.
The insects.
The heat.
The crop that didn't make it.
The thing they couldn't pick fast enough.
Every year, these farmers put seeds in the ground without knowing exactly what's going to happen.
They tend.
They water.
They weed.
They wait.
And then, to some degree, they have to leave the rest to faith and trust.
Maybe that's why this is hitting me so hard this year.
I've been so focused on the harvest that I've barely acknowledged the tending.
Because I'm someone who wants to plant a seed and see fruit the next day.
And if not tomorrow, well...
Why the hell isn't there fruit a month later?!
I know that's not how growing works.
Fruit, vegetables, people — none of us grow on demand.
And yet, how often do we plant something and almost immediately start looking for proof that it's working?
I've been doing exactly that.
Superfine Synergy launched on February 17th.
A little over six months ago.
And I've spent more time than I'd like to admit judging where I think it should be by now.
There is growth. There is momentum. There is plenty of evidence that what I planted is taking root.
But apparently, some part of me thought I'd have an orchard by now.
Shouldn't this be further along?
Shouldn't there be more happening?
Shouldn't I have figured this out already?
And standing at the farmers' market, surrounded by the literal evidence of what it takes to grow something, I can see how unrealistic that expectation is.
Six months.
I'm six months into something I want to grow for years, and I'm judging it as though the harvest is late.
Meanwhile, I've been doing exactly what this season requires of me.
Planting. Tending. Learning. Changing course. Pulling a shit-ton of weeds.
And trusting — sometimes more gracefully than others — that what I'm tending needs the time it needs.
So, maybe the harvest isn't late.
Maybe I'm just standing over the ground demanding fruit from something that's still growing.
And I have a feeling I might not be the only one.
Because I think there's something we get wrong about harvest season.
We see the abundance.
We don't see what it took to create it.
And we do the same thing to ourselves.
We look at what hasn't happened yet.
The thing that isn't healed yet.
The habit we haven't changed.
The goal we haven't reached.
The relationship that still needs tending.
The business that isn't an orchard yet.
And we completely miss the evidence of what has grown.
Maybe you're not as behind as you think you are.
Maybe you've been measuring yourself by the fruit while ignoring all the tending it took to get here.
And maybe, before you decide what needs to happen next, it's worth gathering what this season has already given you.
That's why we're exploring Gather & Ground as our theme this month.
Gather what this season has given you.
Gather the wisdom.
Gather the things that nourish you.
Gather the people, practices, places, foods, movements, moments, and tiny pleasures that leave you feeling more resourced.
And ground yourself enough to keep tending what's still growing.
Because September 1st means we have four months left in 2026.
And you know what I don't want to do with that information?
Turn it into another countdown.
Get back into a routine.
Get back on track.
What haven't I accomplished yet?
Finish the year strong!
Then September becomes October, the holidays arrive, and suddenly we're sprinting through the last third of our lives — I mean, year ;)
I'm not interested in spending the next four months rushing through my life.
I want to notice it.
I want cool mornings on the back deck with something warm in my hands and a blanket over my lap.
I want to watch the lower September sun dance across the water.
I want farm-fresh food grown by people whose work I deeply respect.
I want time on the river with my wife, apple picking with my niece, dancing on Zoom with you.
I want to gather what's nourishing me instead of being so consumed with what's next that I miss what's already here.
And I want to offer you the same invitation.
Before you rush into the next season, take stock of this one.
What did you plant?
What grew?
What didn't?
What surprised you?
What nourished you?
What are you still tending?
And where might you be calling yourself behind when the truth is... you're simply not at harvest yet?
That's what we'll explore together this September as we weave Gather & Ground through our practices all month long.
But you don't need to wait for a class.
And please don't make this another assignment.
Just notice.
Notice what leaves you even 5% more grounded, peaceful, playful, connected, energized, or nourished.
Notice what's already growing.
Notice what deserves a little more tending.
And maybe stop digging up the damn seed to check whether it's working.
Some things need more than six months.
Some things need a season of rest.
Some things grow underground long before we get to see them.
You don't have to rush the harvest.
You just have to keep tending what matters.
